Soccer star Kaka is on his way to become the world's first athlete to reach 10 million followers on Twitter. Kaka plays for Real Madrid, and was about 30,000 followers short of the milestone as of late Monday afternoon. But if he remains at his pace, his @KAKA account will be hitting eight figures within the next few days.

He added more than 35,000 followers in a single day twice during the past week, according to the stats site TwitterCounter.com.

Kaka might be the king of twittersphere in sports, but he's only 17th in the overall list of most followed tweeters. Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber could more than 20 million each.

Kaka’s Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo  is the second most-followed athlete on Twitter. He’s 21st overall and has under nine million followers.

Kaka tweets in English, Spanish and Portuguese and appears to manage his own account. He also tweets photos of himself and teammates, his playing gear and venues of upcoming games.
